It is only a matter of time before we have to rethink the true truth. The Chinese specialist of deep fake Hao Li stated last week on the sidelines of MIT Technology Review‘s EmTech conference that ‘we are at six months – twelve maximum – away from perfectly realistic & virtually undetectable deepfake video’s.’
And as we speak the viral Chinese deepfake app Zao lets people like you and me even superimpose our faces onto celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and it is terrifyingly convincing. Zao is a face-swap program and can let you place yourself in big television shows and movies with a single photograph. This app was was the most-downloaded app in China’s iOS store in the first weekend of September 2019.
Watch for exemple the enclosed video where the face of actress Alison Brie was replaced by Jim Carrey. Now imagine that this technique will be even more sophisticated. And that it will even be impossible to prove that the video was manipulated. And then ask yourself the question: how will we be able to detect the true truth and consider its evidence…
